Advantages of Conformal Coating

Water Protection: Water on your PCBA during operation will certainly lead to several issues, to put it lightly. If your product will be exposed to water regularly in its operational environment, it’s beneficial to provide an extra layer of protection.

Humidity Protection: While this may sound redundant, high humidity environments pose their own threat to a working electrical assembly.

Improved Insulation: Conformal coating can help reduce your conductor spacing, allowing an assembly to get smaller without losing electrical quality. While some coatings, like silicone, offer greater insulation resistance, all conformal coatings offer some level of insulation by design.

Corrosion Resistance: Corrosion of the circuits, components, and solder joints on an assembly can occur rapidly depending on the environment the build is used in.

Mechanical Support and Shock Absorption: Since an additional layer of material is being applied to the assembly and conforming to the shape of every component on the assembly, mechanical support is provided to the components, and subsequently, the circuits.

Thermal Stability: Most active components have an ideal operating temperature, and many have a temperature range in which they cease functioning.

Applications of Conformal Coating

Manual Spraying: For low volume production when capital equipment is not available, conformal coating can be applied by an aerosol can or handheld spray gun. This can be time-consuming and may need to be masked.

Automated Spraying: Programmed spray systems can move PCBs on a conveyor under a reciprocating spray head.

Selective Coating: An automated spray system can actually be programmable, with a robotic spray nozzle applying the conformal coating to specific areas on the PCB. This is popular for high volume assembly because it eliminates the laborious masking process.

Dipping: This is a popular conformal coating method for high volume assembly. Masking is usually necessary before PCBs are coated. Dipping is only practical when coating both sides of the board.

Brushing: Brushing is used mostly for repair and rework. Conformal coating is brushed onto specific areas on the board, not generally the entire PCB.

Types of Conformal Coating

Acrylic-Based Coatings: The main characteristics of Acrylic-based conformal coatings are their low cost and ease of application making them ideal for hobby electronics.

Silicone-Based Coatings: The main characteristics of Silicone-based conformal coatings are their retained elasticity following curing, which offers good protection against the effects of vibrations and high mechanical stress levels on circuit boards.

Polyurethane-Based Coatings: The main characteristics of Polyurethane, or urethane, conformal coatings are their toughness, adhesion, and strong resistance to solvents and other chemical contamination.

Epoxy-Based Coatings: Epoxy-based conformal coatings produce a tough and smooth finish resistant to chipping or cracking, providing good protection against abrasion and moisture ingress.

Parylene-Based Coatings: The main characteristics of Parylene-based conformal coatings are their low thermal expansion and high dielectric strength for specialist applications.

Precautions for Use Conformal Coating

Keep the goods which wants to pot dry and cleaning. Before use, stir fully respectively. Please take as ratio and make sure for the weigh accurately. The glue should be stirred fully after the mixed (suggest to the vacuum de-foaming after mixing).

Please use promptly after the glue has been stirred fully, and use up the mixed glue in operational time. After encapsulated, the glue will gradually infiltrate to the gaps, so you can encapsulate once time if necessary. During curing, please keep the environments cleaning to avoid the dirt dropping into the uncured glue.

FAQ

Q: Is conformal coating waterproof?

A: While conformal coatings can offer a moisture resistant layer of protection, most cannot be considered waterproof. Even if applied heavily, most coatings are semi-permeable, so allow some amount of moisture through.

Q: Can conformal coating be removed?

A: You may be required to remove a conformal coating from the PCB to replace damaged components or other types of rework.

Q: How toxic is conformal coating?

A: Volatile organic compounds (VCOs) that are released can cause some discomfort and irritation to the respiratory system if conformal coating fumes are inhaled.

Q: Does conformal coating protect against moisture?

A: Regardless of the end use of an electronic device, moisture is present in many types of operating environments. Conformal coatings are designed to protect against various degrees of moisture and are a key design element to achieve IPX ratings.

Q: How long does conformal coating take to dry?

A: However, the full curing time can range from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the thickness of the coating and environmental conditions like temperature and humidity.

Q: Will acetone remove conformal coating?

A: For thermoplastic materials such as acrylics or silicone coatings, the cured film can easily be removed with common solvents like acetone or n-butyl acetate.

Q: Can you solder through conformal coating?

A: Thermal/Burn‐through – A common technique of coating removal is to simply burn through the coating with a soldering iron as the board is reworked. This method works well with most forms of conformal coatings.
